Socrates Exchange: Do We Have Too Much Information?

By Laura Knoy on Tuesday, October 19, 2010

We often hear of people suffering from “information overload.” To what exactly are we referring? Is it just that our brains are too slow to process the information now available? Does more information necessarily lead to more truth? Does more truth necessarily lead to a better world? What are the existential ramifications of living in a world where all information is always immediately available? Are there reasons to slow down our development of information technology? Is slowing down even possible given competitive global markets? Must we adopt the technology or get left behind by those who use smarter machines? Where is all of this taking us? Who is in the driver’s seat? Should we resist?

Today, we listen to our first Socrates Exchange at NHPR: Do We Have Too Much Information?

Make your you bring your geography/history journal, toolkit, and reading book to basecamp. Algebra books are also needed.

What’s Up for the Week of October 18-22, 2010

Hope you all had a great weekend.  We kicked off the raffle on Friday; tickets were given out in basecamp. See your basecamp teacher if you were absent. All returns go to your basecamp teacher.

The goal is for everyone to sell at least 5-books of tickets. You are giving back to the team by thanking all of the former Vista students who came before you and raised the funds for the equipment we use today.

Congratulations to Matt H. and Kelsey B. who sold over $200 of tickets at Harvest Market over the weekend. Other students already reaching the 5 book goal are:

  1. Matt H.
  2. Kelsey B.
  3. Ryan C.
  4. Ryan P.
  5. Kearstin D.
  6. Anthony dB.

On Tuesday, we will be participating in the Socrates Exchange on NHPR. The question for the first show of the season is:

Do we have too much information?

Look for a Socrates Exchange post later this afternoon.

Algebra students will still have class on Tuesday.

All 4 classes will meet on Wednesday. Don’t forget to bring money if you want to buy books; all classes will visit the KRMS Scholastic Book Fair for a book browse at the fair and the library. Bring your Someday List.

Thursday will be a regular 3-class rotation.

Finally, come dressed and be ready to hike on Friday. Make sure you are ready for the 2nd spelling test of the year—have your weekly word study homework done.
