The Prized Trophies: Friday, December 17, 2010

From all reports on Friday, Denali has some excellent turkey hunters. With the new year and snow cover fast approaching, it was time for the annual turkey hunt before the first snow. Turkeys included Zac M., Jake M., Billy S., Ben H. and Ryan C. In the first round, all turkeys were found and bagged without too much difficulty. However, in the second round, the table of nature was turned upside down. The turkeys miraculously acquired a second life and used everything they knew about stealth, camouflage, and survival and finally gave the hunters a run for their money. Although all the turkeys didn’t survive, they fared much better in the second hunt. In fact, the chief tom, Ryan C., won the hunt and was the only bird to survive. The next hunt is scheduled for spring 2011. The toms have requested a first-ever winter hunt. Hunters Kelsey and Maddie said, “Don’t those foolish toms know that their tracks might present a problem for them on a winter hunt. We thought turkeys were supposed to be smart birds. We guess all that smartness was lost with the domestication of the bird.”
