Today in SSEnglish, Thursday, December 19, 2013

Here’s what we did today:

1. We continued working on The Story of an Hour and reading it with a pencil. We worked individually, in study groups and as a whole class.

2. We discussed and took notes in creating a plot line about what happened in the story. Make sure your notes are more thorough than the ones posted here.

    What is immersion day?

  • A day you will get to study a topic of your choosing, something you are interested in and want to learn more about, something you have a  passion about, just about anything goes.

Be ready for Immersion Day on Thursday, January 2, 2014.

On the back of the Immersion Day Handout, list three things you might want to study and bring it to basecamp on Friday and get it checked by your basecamp teacher.

Today in SSEnglish, Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Here’s what we did in SSEnglish today:

1. We started class with a mini-lecture on Plot Line; check your notes and compare yours to this copy and see a reliable student and compare your notes to theirs.

2. Reading With A Pencil handout: The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin.

3. Read it with a pencil first by putting a box around words that require the definition (words that prevent you from understanding what is happening in the story).

4. Put a circle around words you don’t know but can skip knowing the meaning for.

5. Read it again with a pencil leaving comments for your underlines as you try and understand the story.

6. Draw a plot line diagram for the story by placing the events where they belong on your diagram.

Finally, our very own Peter L. brought home the top prize in this year’s CO2 Race Car Final.

Congratulations Pete.

Papa Bear—Ben Kilham and Ursus Americanus

Every now and then, we find out about a New Hampshire citizen who is doing great things that is worth sharing. That man today is Ben Kilham, a bear rehabilitator, from Lyme, NH.

Ben is considered one of the leading bear experts in the world about Ursus americanus, the North American black bear, a species that is doing quite well here in New Hampshire.

Kilham has written two books about black bears, Among The Bears—Raising Orphan Cubs in the Wild (co-written by Ed Gray) and Out On A Limb—What Black Bears Have Taught Me about Intelligence and Intuition, just recently published.

Ben’s own Web site gives you a quick look into the work he does as a rehabilitator and what that has taught him about black bears. Ben is currently working on his PhD in wildlife biology.

NHPR aired an interview in October with Ben. It has links to other segments they have done about him at NHPR.
