Here’s what we did today:

1. We began class with a handout for the Poetry Table of Contents—don’t forget to update (especially you, The Big Three, whose TOC was all messed up today; you know who you are). We read and enjoyed a poem by Emily Dickinson.

Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson

Emily is one our most famous New England poets. She was born in Amherst, Massachusetts and lived from 1830-1886. Here’s a link to more information about Emily.

Thank you to Rebecca and Ms. Bunting for sharing the book with us.

If you were absent today, don’t forget to get a copy of the poem handout and get the notes from someone about today’s poem.

2. Work continued in research groups on Fracturing. Posters are due tomorrow and presentations take place on Tuesday, October 22.

3. SSEnglish journals were collected at the end of class and will be graded and returned on Wednesday.

Coming up: More Dancing With the Stars to Big Band Ballads, Jazz, and Swing, always with a little bit of a Russian twist.

I Am Malala…

A new book released on Oct. 8, and written by Malala Yousafzai, a 16 year-old Pashtun girl from Pakistan, is getting rave reviews from readers. And, she is the youngest person ever to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. The title of her new book is: I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban and this is her story.

Here’s what we did today…

1. Today’s poem was “Fog” by Carl Sandburg. Don’t forget to update your Poetry Table of Contents.

2. Research groups continued working on Fracturing.

3. Presentations and posters are due on Thursday, October 17.

Remember, page numbers will be taken for reading workshop tomorrow; you should have read 60 pages since Monday.

Carl Sandburg (January 6, 1878 – July 22, 1967) was an American writer and editor, best known for his poetry. He was the recipient of three Pulitzer Prizes: two for his poetry and another for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. H. L. Mencken called Sandburg “indubitably an American in every pulse-beat”.

Here’s what you will begin doing today in SSEnglish:

1. Working in your research group, learn more about fracking by viewing this interactive feature from National Geographic. View and discuss this resource multiple times. Remember how many times we listened to the audio recording on Monday.

2. As you go through the interactive, keep a running list in your journal and on a T-chart of the pro’s and con’s of fracking.

Take notes in your SSEnglish Journal and keep them neat and organized.

3. Keep a list of questions you have as you build more background knowledge. This is very important in building more and deeper background knowledge.

5. Read this article from Propublica—”What is Hydraulic Fracturing?”  to build even more background knowledge.

Take notes in your SSEnglish Journal and keep them neat and organized.

Finally,

In your research group, create a poster that includes at least the three areas below:

Your poster must include/show:

•The pros and cons of fracking.
•Information how fracking could cause earthquakes
Why fracking could be a hazard.

Going Beyond—Additional Resources

&

Building More Background Knowledge

•Here is a link to an article—”Technology Behind the Frack” from the Independent Petroleum Association of America refuting the fracking causes earthquakes.

•Here’s a link to Web resources on geology and earthquakes.
